A ‘Looper’ is someone who completes the Great Loop, a dream for many boaters. This iconic route encompasses a circumnavigation of the eastern United States and parts of Canada. It takes you through scenic waterways, historic towns, and vibrant communities along the way. Among the many charming stops is Pentwater, Michigan—a quaint village along the shores of Lake Michigan.

With a rich maritime heritage and a welcoming atmosphere, Pentwater is the perfect pit stop for Loopers to refresh and hang out for a while.

What Is the Great Loop?

The Great Loop is a continuous water route that allows recreational boaters to circumnavigate through the Eastern United States and parts of Canada. It’s approximately 6,000 miles and navigates through interconnected waterways such as the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal Waterways, the Great Lakes, Canadian Heritage Canals, and various inland rivers. 

Cruisers embarking on the Great Loop voyage encounter diverse landscapes, from serene rivers and lakes to bustling urban waterfronts. The Great Loop is a test of seamanship and an experience filled with adventure, discovery, and camaraderie.

Navigating to Pentwater

For boaters navigating the Great Loop, Pentwater is a convenient destination on the east coast of Lake Michigan. The village of Pentwater sits on a well-protected harbor with various docking options and is easily accessible by watercraft. Loopers will find Pentwater’s entrance from Lake Michigan marked by its iconic lighthouse.

Pentwater’s Maritime Charm

Upon entering Pentwater’s harbor, you’ll be greeted by a panorama of sailboats bobbing gently in the breeze and colorful waterfront cottages dotting the shoreline. Pentwater’s quaint charm makes it nostalgic for many cruisers. You’ll find a range of amenities and services, including transient dockage, fueling stations, and provisioning facilities.

There are three marinas located in the village. Reservations are recommended as slips fill up during peak season.  

Stay Longer

For boaters embarking on the Great Loop, Pentwater offers a convenient and idyllic stopover. It’s also ideal for a longer stay and time off the boat. We offer a vacation rental with a private dock for boats up to 60 feet long and a draft of up to 4.5 feet. It allows you the unique opportunity to enjoy the comforts of a ‘land home’ for a while or to invite family or friends for a visit. The house accommodates up to eight people with four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, laundry, a fully-equipped chef’s kitchen, a fireplace, a grill, an entertainment room, multiple outdoor decks and seating, epic sunset views over Pentwater Lake, and more.

Exploring Pentwater

While Pentwater may be small in size, there’s plenty to do. Loopers can spend their time ashore exploring the village’s vibrant downtown area, which has boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and more. There’s also a public beach at Mears State Park within walking distance of downtown and the marinas.
